JNTU B.Tech II FLUID MECHANICS Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
PART A
List out different fluid properties and their units.
Answer
Key fluid properties and their SI units are: Mass density (kg/m3), Weight density (N/m3), Specific volume (m3/kg), Specific gravity (dimensionless), Dynamic viscosity (N·s/m2 or Pa·s), Kinematic viscosity (m2/s), and Surface tension (N/m).
Distinguish gauge, vacuum and atmospheric pressures.
Answer
Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere at a given location. Gauge pressure is the pressure measured relative to the local atmospheric pressure, which can be positive (above atmospheric) or negative. Vacuum pressure is a negative gauge pressure, representing the amount by which the absolute pressure falls below atmospheric pressure.

A simple manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil (sp.gr.=0.9) flowing in a pipe line. It’s right limb is open to the atmosphere and left limb is connected to the pipe. The centre of the pipe is 8 cm below the level of mercury (sp.gr.13.6) in the right limb. If the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 12 cm, determine the absolute pressure of the oil in the pipe in N/m2.

Two sharp ended pipes of diameters 50 mm and 90 mm respectively, each of length 120 m are connected in parallel between two reservoirs which have a difference of level of 13 m. If co-efficient of friction for each pipe is 0.07, calculate the rate of flow for each pipe and also the diameter of a single pipe 150 m long which would give the same discharge if it were substituted for the original two pipes.
