Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What are the practical applications of impact loads?

2 marks

Answer

Impact loads occur when a load is applied suddenly with significant velocity, causing kinetic energy to be transferred to a structure. Practical applications include pile driving operations where a hammer strikes the pile, the operation of forging hammers or drop hammers in manufacturing, and the dynamic loading experienced by vehicle components such as suspension systems or bridge decks when subjected to moving traffic.

1.b

Define the following terms: i) Elasticity and Plasticity ii) factor of safety iii) Lateral and longitudinal strains.

3 marks

Answer

i) Elasticity is the property of a material by virtue of which it regains its original shape and size after the removal of the external load. Plasticity is the property of a material by which it undergoes permanent deformation without fracture even after the removal of the load.

ii) Factor of Safety is defined as the ratio of the ultimate stress to the working or permissible stress of a material. It is used to ensure structural safety by providing a margin against unexpected overloads or material defects.

iii) Longitudinal strain is the ratio of the change in length of a body to its original length in the direction of the applied force. Lateral strain is the ratio of the change in width or diameter of a body to its original width or diameter, occurring in a direction perpendicular to the applied force.
