The Modulus of rigidity for a material is 0.81×105 MPa. A 10 mm diameter rod was subjected to an axial pull of 10 kN and the change in diameter was observed to be 3×10-3 mm. Calculate Poisson’s ratio and the modulus of elasticity.

Answer

Given: Modulus of rigidity (G) = 0.81 × 105 MPa, Diameter (d) = 10 mm, Axial load (P) = 10 kN = 10,000 N, Change in diameter (δd) = 3 × 10-3 mm.

First, calculate the lateral strain (εlat):

εlat = δd / d = (3 × 10-3) / 10 = 3 × 10-4

Calculate the axial stress (σ):

Area (A) = (π / 4) × 102 = 78.54 mm2
σ = P / A = 10,000 / 78.54 = 127.32 MPa

Using the relationship between Poisson's ratio (μ) and lateral strain: εlat = -μ × (σ / E). We also know G = E / (2(1 + μ)), so E = 2G(1 + μ). Substituting E into the strain equation:

3 × 10-4 = μ × (127.32 / (2 × 0.81 × 105 × (1 + μ)))
3 × 10-4 = μ × (127.32 / (1.62 × 105 × (1 + μ)))
0.0003 × 162,000 × (1 + μ) = 127.32μ
48.6 + 48.6μ = 127.32μ
78.72μ = 48.6 ⇒ μ = 0.617

Now, calculate the modulus of elasticity (E):

E = 2G(1 + μ) = 2 × 0.81 × 105 × (1 + 0.617) = 2.62 × 105 MPa

Deduce the total extension of a uniformly tapering rod of diameters d and D over a length of L, when the rod is subjected to an axial load ‘P’.

Answer

Consider a small element of length dx at a distance x from the smaller end (diameter d). The diameter dx at this section is given by:

dx = d + ((D - d) / L) × x

The area of this section is Ax = (π / 4) × dx2. The extension of the small element dx is:

δδ = (P × dx) / (Ax × E) = (4P × dx) / (π × E × (d + ((D - d) / L) × x)2)

Integrating from x = 0 to x = L:

δ = ∫0L (4P / (πE)) × (dx / (d + ((D - d) / L) × x)2)

Let k = (D - d) / L. Then dx = dk / k. The integral becomes:

δ = (4P / (πE)) × (1 / k) × [-1 / (d + kx)]0L
δ = (4P / (πE)) × (L / (D - d)) × (1 / d - 1 / D)
δ = (4P × L) / (π × E × d × D)
