Derive the relation between the three elastic modulii (E, G and K).

7 marks

Answer

The relationship between Young's modulus (E), Modulus of rigidity (G), and Bulk modulus (K) is derived using the following fundamental expressions:

E = 2G(1 + μ)
E = 3K(1 - 2μ)

To relate them, we eliminate the Poisson's ratio (μ). From the first equation, μ = (E / 2G) - 1. Substituting this into the second equation:

E = 3K(1 - 2((E / 2G) - 1))
E = 3K(1 - (E / G) + 2) = 3K(3 - E / G)

Rearranging the terms to isolate E:

E = 9K - (3KE / G)
E(1 + 3K / G) = 9K
E((G + 3K) / G) = 9K
E = (9KG) / (3K + G)

Explain the Strain Energy and deduce the expressions due to gradual and suddenly applied loading.

8 marks

Answer

Strain Energy is the energy stored in a body due to deformation under the action of external loads, equal to the work done by the load. For a bar of length L, area A, and modulus E:

1. Gradual Loading: The load P increases linearly from 0 to P. The average load is P/2. Work done = (P/2) × δ, where δ = PL/AE. Thus, Strain Energy (U) = (P^2 L) / (2AE).

2. Suddenly Applied Loading: The load P is applied instantly. The load remains constant throughout the deformation δ. Work done = P × δ. The strain energy stored is (P^2 L) / (2AE). Equating work done to strain energy:

P × δ = (P^2 L) / (2AE)

Since δ = PL/AE, substituting this shows that the instantaneous deformation is twice the deformation caused by a gradual load of the same magnitude, and the maximum stress induced is twice the stress of a gradual load.
