a

Write the equation for the strain energy for a circular solid shaft.

2 marks

Answer

The strain energy U stored in a circular solid shaft of length L, radius R, subjected to a torque T is given by:

U = T²L / (2GJ)

where G is the modulus of rigidity and J is the polar moment of inertia (πd⁴/32).
b

A thin square plate is uniformly deformed as shown in Figure.1. For the deformed plate determine the shear strain γxy at corner R and S.

3 marks

Answer

Shear strain γxy is defined as the change in the angle between two initially perpendicular lines. For a square plate deformed into a parallelogram, the shear strain is the decrease in the right angle at the corners. If the plate at corner R and S undergoes a change in angle Δθ (in radians), the shear strain is γxy = π/2 - θ', where θ' is the new angle between the edges.
