Differentiate between Prismatic compass and Surveyor’s compass with reference to reading and tripod.

8 marks

Answer

The differences between a Prismatic compass and a Surveyor’s compass regarding reading and tripod usage are as follows:

FeaturePrismatic CompassSurveyor’s Compass
ReadingReadings are taken directly through a prism while sighting the object. The graduations are in the WCB system (0° to 360°).Readings are taken by looking through the top of the glass after the needle comes to rest. The graduations are in the QBE system (0° to 90°).
TripodIt is essentially used with a tripod stand to ensure stability during the observation process. It must be used with a tripod stand, as it is not designed for hand-held use due to the need for precise leveling.

What do you understand by closing error? Show how can it be adjusted by graphical method.

7 marks

Answer

A closing error occurs in a closed traverse when the final position of the last station, as plotted from the survey measurements, does not coincide with the starting station. It represents the resultant displacement between the calculated end point and the actual starting point.

The graphical method (also known as Bowditch's graphical method) for adjustment is performed as follows:

  1. Plot the traverse to a suitable scale on a drawing sheet. Let the closing error be represented by the vector e, which is the distance between the starting point A and the final point A'.
  2. Draw a straight line representing the total perimeter of the traverse to a convenient scale.
  3. Mark the lengths of individual traverse lines sequentially along this line.
  4. At the end of the total length, erect a perpendicular equal to the magnitude of the closing error e.
  5. Connect the end of this perpendicular to the start of the line.
  6. For each station, draw a perpendicular from the point representing its cumulative distance on the base line to the hypotenuse. These perpendicular segments represent the correction to be applied to the corresponding station point in the plotted traverse.

The following consecutive readings were taken with a level and 5 meter leveling staff a continuously sloping ground on a common interval of 20 meters. 0.385; 1.030; 1.925; 2.825; 3.730; 4.685; 0.625; 2.005; 3.1101; 4.485. The R.L of the first point was 208.125 m. Rule out a page of level book and enter the readings. Calculate the R.L’s of the points by rise and fall method.
