Answer PaperPaper Code: 134CDMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

(25 Marks)

1a

Define polar modulus.

2 marks

Answer

Polar modulus, often denoted by Zp, is defined as the ratio of the polar moment of inertia (J) of a circular shaft's cross-section to the radius (R) of the shaft. It represents the torsional strength of the shaft section.

Zp = J / R

For a solid circular shaft of diameter d, it is expressed as Zp = (πd3) / 16.

1b

Why is the shear stress greater at the outer surface of the shaft than at the inner core?

3 marks

Answer

In a circular shaft subjected to torsion, the shear stress (τ) at any radial distance (r) from the center is given by the torsion formula:

τ = (T × r) / J

where T is the applied torque and J is the polar moment of inertia. Since T and J are constant for a given cross-section, the shear stress is directly proportional to the radial distance r. Consequently, the shear stress is zero at the central axis (where r = 0) and increases linearly to reach its maximum value at the outer surface (where r = R, the radius of the shaft).
