a

Define the stiffness of a spring and write down an expression for the same of a open coiled helical spring.

2 marks

Answer

Stiffness of a spring is defined as the load required per unit deflection. For an open coiled helical spring, the stiffness k is given by:

k = (G d4 cos2α) / (8 D3 n)

where G is the modulus of rigidity, d is the wire diameter, D is the mean coil diameter, n is the number of turns, and α is the helix angle.

b

Derive an expression for the power transmitted by a shaft.

3 marks

Answer

Power transmitted by a shaft is the product of torque and angular velocity. If T is the torque in N-mm and ω is the angular velocity in rad/s, the power P is:

P = T × ω

Substituting ω = (2 π N) / 60, where N is the speed in rpm:

P = (2 π N T) / 60

The result is in Watts when T is in N-m.

c
