PART A

125 marks
a

Differentiate between Kinematic indeterminacy and static indeterminacy.

2 marks

Answer

Static indeterminacy is the number of unknown forces that cannot be determined using the equations of static equilibrium. Kinematic indeterminacy is the number of independent joint displacements (degrees of freedom) required to define the deformed shape of the structure.

b

A propped cantilever beam of span ‘l’ is carrying an udl of intensity ‘w’ throughout its span. What is the vertical reaction at fixed support? EI=constant.

3 marks

Answer

For a propped cantilever of span l with a uniform distributed load w, the vertical reaction at the fixed support (R_A) is calculated by considering the compatibility condition at the prop. The reaction at the prop is 3wl/8. By equilibrium, the sum of vertical forces is R_A + R_B = wl. Therefore, R_A = wl - 3wl/8 = 5wl/8.
