Answer PaperPaper Code: 135AJMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

Distinguish between singly reinforced and doubly reinforced beams.

2 marks

Answer

A singly reinforced beam contains reinforcement only in the tension zone to resist tensile stresses. A doubly reinforced beam contains reinforcement in both the tension and compression zones, typically used when the depth of the beam is restricted or when the beam is subjected to load reversals.

b

Distinguish between balanced section, under reinforced section and over reinforced section.

3 marks

Answer

A balanced section is one where the concrete and steel reach their maximum allowable stresses simultaneously. An under-reinforced section has less steel than a balanced section, causing the steel to yield first, which provides a ductile failure. An over-reinforced section has more steel than a balanced section, leading to brittle failure as the concrete crushes before the steel yields.

c

List the various shear failures of beams.

a

A doubly reinforced section is 250mm wide and 500mm deep to the centre of tensile reinforcement. It is reinforced with 2bars of 16mm diameter as compression reinforcement at an effective cover of 50mm and 4bars of 25mm diameter as tensile reinforcement. Calculate the ultimate moment of resistance of the beam section.
