Answer PaperPaper Code: 135CGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Determine the packing factor of HCP structure.

2 marks

Answer

The Atomic Packing Factor (APF) of the Hexagonal Close-Packed (HCP) structure is 0.74. This is calculated by dividing the volume of atoms in the unit cell (6 atoms × 4/3 πr³) by the total volume of the unit cell (base area × height, where height c = 1.633a).

b

What is the effect of grain size on the properties of the metals?

3 marks

Answer

Grain size significantly influences mechanical properties: finer grain size increases both the yield strength and hardness of a metal according to the Hall-Petch relationship. Additionally, finer grains improve toughness and ductility, whereas coarser grains may improve high-temperature creep resistance but generally result in lower room-temperature strength.
