Define Managerial skills. Elaborate the functions and levels of management.
Answer
Managerial skills are the specific abilities and competencies that managers possess to perform their duties effectively. Robert Katz identified three primary categories: Technical skills (knowledge of processes and tools), Human skills (ability to work with and motivate people), and Conceptual skills (ability to analyze complex situations and see the organization as a whole).
The functions of management include Planning (setting goals), Organizing (arranging resources), Staffing (hiring and training), Directing (guiding and motivating), and Controlling (monitoring performance against standards).
The levels of management are structured hierarchically:
- Top-level management: Includes CEOs and Board of Directors, responsible for strategic planning and organizational policy.
- Middle-level management: Includes department heads and branch managers, responsible for implementing top-level strategies and supervising lower levels.
- Lower-level (Operational) management: Includes supervisors and foremen, responsible for day-to-day operations and task execution.
Explain the principle of scientific management.
Answer
Scientific management, pioneered by Frederick Winslow Taylor, focuses on improving economic efficiency and labor productivity by applying scientific methods to the management of workers and processes. The core principles are:
- Science, not Rule of Thumb: Replace traditional, intuitive methods with scientific study of tasks to determine the most efficient way to perform them.
- Scientific Selection and Training: Workers should be scientifically selected based on their capabilities and then trained to perform their specific tasks to the highest standard.
- Cooperation between Management and Workers: Ensure that the work is performed in accordance with scientific principles through close collaboration and by aligning the interests of both parties.
- Equal Division of Responsibility: Management should take over all work for which they are better suited than the workmen (such as planning and scheduling), while workers focus on the actual execution of tasks.
The ultimate goal is to maximize output while minimizing waste, ensuring prosperity for both the employer and the employee through standardized methods and incentive-based pay systems.
