Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Discuss briefly the challenges and future prospectus of nanotechnology.
Answer
The challenges of nanotechnology primarily involve technical, environmental, and ethical hurdles. Technically, the precise manipulation of atoms and molecules at the nanoscale requires advanced instrumentation and remains costly to scale for mass production. Environmental and health concerns arise from the unknown toxicity of nanoparticles, which may cross biological barriers and accumulate in the environment. Ethically, there are concerns regarding privacy, security, and the potential for dual-use technologies in military applications.
The future prospectus is vast, with potential to revolutionize medicine, energy, and materials science. Future developments include targeted drug delivery systems that minimize side effects, high-efficiency solar cells and energy storage devices, and the creation of ultra-strong, lightweight materials for aerospace and construction. As manufacturing techniques like molecular self-assembly mature, nanotechnology will likely transition from laboratory research to ubiquitous industrial application, fundamentally altering how we interact with the physical world.
Describe all fascinating nanostructures with examples.
Answer
Nanostructures are classified based on their dimensionality, representing materials with at least one dimension in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers. Key structures include:
- Zero-dimensional (0D) nanostructures: All three dimensions are at the nanoscale. Examples include quantum dots, which are semiconductor nanocrystals that exhibit size-dependent optical properties due to quantum confinement.
- One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures: Two dimensions are at the nanoscale, while the third is macroscopic. Examples include nanowires and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs are cylindrical nanostructures of graphene sheets known for their exceptional tensile strength and electrical conductivity.
- Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures: One dimension is at the nanoscale, while two are macroscopic. The most prominent example is graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, offering high thermal conductivity and electron mobility.
- Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures: These are bulk materials composed of nanoscale building blocks. Examples include nanocrystalline materials and dendrimers, which are highly branched, tree-like macromolecules used extensively in drug delivery and catalysis.
