Answer PaperPaper Code: 115ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

Distinguish between under-reinforced and over-reinforced sections.

2 marks

Answer

In an under-reinforced section, the steel reaches its yield strain before the concrete reaches its ultimate compressive strain, leading to a ductile failure. In an over-reinforced section, the concrete reaches its ultimate strain first, causing a sudden, brittle failure without warning.

b

Why doubly reinforced sections are used?

3 marks

Answer

Doubly reinforced sections are used when the dimensions of a beam are restricted due to architectural or headroom requirements, and the moment to be resisted exceeds the moment of resistance capacity of a singly reinforced section of the same size. They are also used to increase the ductility of the beam and to reduce long-term deflections caused by creep and shrinkage.

A reinforced concrete slab of 100 mm thick is supported by 230 mm wide RCC beams spaced at 3 m c/c. The beams have a clear span of 5 m cast monolithic with slab and supported on 300 mm wide supports. The live load acing on the floor is 3 kN/m2 and the floor finish is 1.5 kN/m2. Design the T-beam section using M 25 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
