Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions. iv) Use of IS 456 and design charts for columns from Sp 16 is allowed.
Part A
Define Effective cover of beam.
Answer
The effective cover of a beam is defined as the distance measured from the extreme compression fiber of the concrete section to the centroid of the area of the main tension reinforcement. It is calculated by subtracting the distance from the centroid of the tension steel to the bottom face of the beam (the effective depth constant) from the overall depth of the beam.
Define Effective Depth of beam with Example.
Answer
The effective depth of a reinforced concrete beam is defined as the distance from the extreme compression fiber to the centroid of the longitudinal tensile reinforcement. It is a critical parameter used in structural design to calculate the lever arm and the moment of resistance of the beam section.
For example, in a rectangular beam of overall depth D, if the clear cover to the stirrups is c, the diameter of the stirrup is φs, and the diameter of the main longitudinal reinforcement is φl, the effective depth d is calculated as:
This measurement ensures that the internal force couple is accurately represented during the analysis of bending stresses.

An RCC simply supported beam having over all cross section of 250 × 500 mm is reinforced with 4 of 25mm diameter bars as tension reinforcement and shear reinforcement of 2 legged vertical stirrups of 8mm diameter at 300mm c/c. Determine the safe load carrying capacity of the beam, if the effective span of the beam is 6.3m subjected to mild exposure condition. Assume M25 grade of concrete and Fe 500 grade of steel.

Design a dog legged staircase for an office building, given the following data: Height between floor = 3.2m; Riser = 160mm, Tread = 270mm; Width of flight = 1.25m; Live load = 5kN/m^2; Finishes load = 0.6kN/m^2. Assume the stairs to be supported on 230mm thick masonry walls at the outer edges of the landing, parallel to the risers. Adopt mild exposure with M20 grade concrete and Fe415 steel.
