Answer PaperPaper Code: 115ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions. IS 456-2000 code book and SP-16 Pu-Mu charts are allowed.

Part A

125 marks
a

Distinguish between balanced section and un-balanced section.

2 marks

Answer

A balanced section is one where the concrete reaches its ultimate compressive strain simultaneously with the steel reaching its yield strain. An unbalanced section (under-reinforced or over-reinforced) occurs when one material reaches its design limit before the other, leading to either ductile failure (under-reinforced) or brittle failure (over-reinforced).

b

Determine the maximum depth of Neutral axis for mild steel, Fe500 and Fe415 steel when the effective depth of section is 400mm.

3 marks

Answer

The maximum depth of the neutral axis (xu,max) is determined by the grade of steel. For an effective depth (d) of 400 mm:

  • Mild Steel (Fe250): xu,max = 0.53d = 0.53 × 400 = 212 mm
  • Fe415 Steel: xu,max = 0.48d = 0.48 × 400 = 192 mm
  • Fe500 Steel: xu,max = 0.46d = 0.46 × 400 = 184 mm
