PART - A

(25 Marks)

125 marks
a

Define Lever arm and Moment of resistance.

2 marks

Answer

Lever arm is the perpendicular distance between the centroid of the compressive force and the centroid of the tensile force in a beam section. Moment of resistance is the internal moment capacity of a structural section, calculated as the product of the total compressive or tensile force and the lever arm.

b

List out the situation where doubly reinforced beams are used.

3 marks

Answer

  • When the depth of the beam is restricted by architectural or functional requirements, preventing the use of a deep enough singly reinforced section.
  • When the bending moment exceeds the maximum moment capacity of a singly reinforced beam of the given dimensions.
  • When the beam is subjected to load reversals, such as in cantilever beams or seismic loading conditions.
c

Define Anchorage and Development length.
