Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Using the stress block parameters, obtain the expression for the total compressive force in the section.

2 marks

Answer

The total compressive force C is obtained by integrating the stress distribution over the area of the compression zone. For a rectangular section of width b and neutral axis depth xu, with a maximum concrete stress of 0.446fck, the force is given by:

C = 0.36 fck b xu
b

Explain the philosophy of Limit State Method of Design.

3 marks

Answer

The Limit State Method is a design philosophy that ensures a structure remains fit for its intended use throughout its design life. It considers two primary states: the Limit State of Collapse (safety against structural failure) and the Limit State of Serviceability (functionality, such as deflection and cracking). It uses partial safety factors for both loads and material strengths to account for uncertainties.

A reinforced concrete beam of cross-section 300 mm × 450 mm is reinforced with 4-20 mm bars on the tension side and 2-12 mm bars on the compression side. The shear reinforcement consists of 2-legged 8 mm stirrups at a spacing of 150 mm c/c. The effective cover to the reinforcement is of 40 mm on both sides. Determine the shear strength of the section. Use M 25 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.

A RC simply supported beam of span 6 m and cross-section 300 mm × 550 mm (Effective depth) is reinforced with 6 bars of 25 mm diameter on tension side and 3 bars of 20 mm diameter on compression side at an effective cover of 50 mm on both sides. The beam carries a total working load of 60 kN/m over the entire span, out of which 40 kN/m is live load. Determine the short term deflection and deflection due to creep and shrinkage. Adopt the creep coefficient is 1.6 and the ultimate shrinkage strain is 0.0003. Use M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
