PART - A

1.a

List the advantages of Small hydro power plant.

2 marks

Answer

Small hydro power plants offer several advantages, including:

  • Low environmental impact: They typically require minimal land use and do not involve large-scale reservoir flooding or significant displacement of populations.
  • Reliability and longevity: These systems provide a consistent and predictable source of renewable energy with a long operational lifespan and relatively low maintenance costs compared to other renewable technologies.
  • Local energy security: They are ideal for remote or off-grid locations, providing decentralized power generation that reduces transmission losses and dependence on fossil fuels.
1.b

Explain the process of Photosynthesis.

3 marks

Answer

Photosynthesis is the biological process by which green plants, algae, and certain bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. The process primarily occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells, where the pigment chlorophyll captures solar energy.

The overall chemical reaction is represented as:

6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2

The process occurs in two main stages: the light-dependent reactions, where sunlight is absorbed to produce ATP and NADPH, and the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle), which use these energy carriers to fix atmospheric carbon dioxide into glucose. Oxygen is released as a vital byproduct of this process.
