JNTU B.Tech III WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-I Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
Write rain fall double mass curve.
Answer
The Double Mass Curve is a graphical technique used to check the consistency of a rain gauge station's data. It is plotted by taking the cumulative annual rainfall of the station in question on the y-axis against the cumulative average annual rainfall of a group of neighboring stations on the x-axis. A change in the slope of the resulting straight line indicates a change in the gauge's exposure or recording conditions.
Explain the w-index.
Answer
The W-index is the average infiltration rate during the time when the rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity. It is calculated by subtracting the total surface runoff from the total storm rainfall and dividing the remainder by the duration of rainfall excess. Unlike the Phi-index, the W-index excludes initial losses and is generally more accurate for long-duration storms.

Raingauage stations A, B, C, D, E and F have normal annual rain fall of 620, 564, 478, 616, 573 and 392 mm respectively. During a storm, stations B, C, D, E and F have reported rainfall of 22, 29, 35, 13 and 25 mm respectively and station A did not report as it was inoperative. Estimate the missing storm rainfall at A by Arithmetic and Average rainfall method.
