Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad B.Tech III AIR POLLUTION AND CONTROL Previous Question Paper (August/September - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Answer all questions.
What are the man-made sources for NOx emissions?
Answer
Man-made sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx) primarily result from high-temperature combustion processes. The main contributors include stationary sources such as fossil fuel-fired power plants, industrial boilers, and furnaces, as well as mobile sources like internal combustion engines in automobiles, trucks, and aircraft.
Give two examples of secondary air pollutants.
Answer
Secondary air pollutants are those that are not emitted directly into the atmosphere but are formed through chemical or photochemical reactions between primary pollutants and other atmospheric components. Two common examples are:
- Ground-level Ozone (O3): Formed by the photochemical reaction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of sunlight.
- Peroxyacetyl Nitrate (PAN): A component of photochemical smog, produced by the reaction of nitrogen dioxide with peroxy radicals derived from hydrocarbons.
