a

Define Entrepreneurship. Explain types of entrepreneurs.

7 marks

Answer

Entrepreneurship is the dynamic process of creating incremental wealth by individuals who assume the major risks in terms of equity, time, and career commitment to provide value for a product or service. It involves identifying opportunities, mobilizing resources, and organizing a business venture to achieve growth and profit.

Entrepreneurs are classified into several types based on their approach and motivation:

  • Innovative Entrepreneurs: These individuals introduce new goods, inaugurate new methods of production, discover new markets, or reorganize the enterprise. They are characterized by a high level of creativity and the ability to turn new ideas into successful ventures.
  • Imitative (Adoptive) Entrepreneurs: These entrepreneurs do not innovate themselves but adopt successful innovations introduced by others. They are common in developing economies where they replicate proven business models.
  • Fabian Entrepreneurs: These are characterized by great caution and skepticism in experimenting with any change in their enterprise. They only adopt new methods when it becomes perfectly clear that failure to do so would result in a loss of their relative position in the market.
  • Drone Entrepreneurs: These individuals refuse to adopt opportunities to make changes in production formulae even at the cost of severely reduced returns. They are often satisfied with traditional methods and resist modernization.
  • Social Entrepreneurs: These individuals focus on creating social value rather than just profit. Their primary goal is to address social issues, such as poverty, education, or environmental sustainability, through business solutions.
b

Explain the process of entrepreneurial development.

8 marks

Answer

The entrepreneurial development process is a structured sequence of activities designed to transform an individual into an effective entrepreneur. It involves the following stages:

  • Identification of Potential Entrepreneurs: This initial stage involves screening individuals based on their psychological traits, motivation, and risk-taking ability to identify those with the potential to succeed in a business venture.
  • Selection and Training: Once identified, candidates undergo rigorous training programs. This includes Achievement Motivation Training (AMT), which aims to instill the need for achievement, power, and affiliation, and technical training to enhance managerial and operational skills.
  • Project Identification and Formulation: Entrepreneurs are guided to identify viable business opportunities based on market demand, resource availability, and technical feasibility. This stage involves preparing a detailed Project Report or Business Plan.
  • Resource Mobilization: This involves securing the necessary inputs, including land, labor, capital, and technology. It includes navigating the regulatory environment to obtain licenses, permits, and financial assistance from banks or venture capital firms.
  • Enterprise Launch and Management: The entrepreneur establishes the legal entity and begins operations. This stage focuses on effective resource allocation, marketing, and managing the day-to-day operations to ensure sustainability.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuous assessment of the venture's performance against the initial business plan is necessary. This allows for corrective actions, scaling operations, or pivoting strategies based on market feedback.

The process is supported by governmental and institutional frameworks that provide infrastructure, subsidies, and consultancy services to foster a conducive entrepreneurial ecosystem.
