Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

1.a

Define volumetric shrinkage.

2 marks

Answer

Volumetric shrinkage is the reduction in the volume of a cast metal or plastic part as it transitions from a liquid state to a solid state during the cooling process. It occurs due to the combined effects of liquid contraction, solidification shrinkage, and solid thermal contraction, and is typically expressed as a percentage of the original volume.

1.b

What is the purpose of riser in casting?

3 marks

Answer

The primary purpose of a riser (also known as a feeder) in casting is to provide a reservoir of molten metal that compensates for the shrinkage that occurs as the casting cools and solidifies. By remaining molten longer than the casting itself, the riser feeds liquid metal into the mold cavity to prevent the formation of shrinkage cavities or voids within the final product. Additionally, risers help in promoting directional solidification and allow for the escape of gases trapped within the mold.
