How does hydrologic cycle affect ground water recharge? Discuss.

15 marks

Answer

The hydrologic cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth, acting as the fundamental mechanism that replenishes groundwater reservoirs. Groundwater recharge is essentially the process by which water from the surface infiltrates the soil and percolates downward to reach the saturated zone of an aquifer.

The cycle influences recharge through several key processes:

  • Precipitation: This is the primary input. The intensity, duration, and frequency of rainfall determine the amount of water available for infiltration. High-intensity storms may lead to surface runoff, whereas steady, prolonged rainfall allows for greater soil moisture absorption and eventual deep percolation.
  • Infiltration and Percolation: As precipitation reaches the ground, it infiltrates the soil profile. The rate of infiltration is controlled by soil texture, structure, and existing moisture content. Water that exceeds the soil's field capacity moves downward through the unsaturated (vadose) zone due to gravity, eventually reaching the water table.
  • Evapotranspiration: This is a major loss component in the cycle. Plants extract water from the soil, and water evaporates directly from the surface. High rates of evapotranspiration significantly reduce the volume of water available for recharge, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
  • Surface Runoff and Streamflow: The hydrologic cycle dictates how water moves across the landscape. Streams and rivers can act as either gaining or losing reaches. In losing streams, water from the channel bed percolates into the underlying aquifer, providing a significant source of localized recharge.
  • Climate and Seasonal Variations: Climatic fluctuations directly impact recharge rates. During wet seasons, the water table rises as recharge exceeds discharge. Conversely, during dry periods, the lack of precipitation and increased evapotranspiration lead to a decline in groundwater levels.

In summary, the hydrologic cycle maintains the balance between water input (precipitation) and output (evapotranspiration, runoff, and discharge). Effective groundwater management requires an understanding of these cycle components to estimate the recharge potential of a basin, which is critical for sustainable groundwater development.

What is an aquifer? Discuss different type of aquifers with their features.

15 marks

Answer

An aquifer is a saturated geological formation that contains sufficient permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells or springs. It acts as both a storage reservoir and a conduit for groundwater movement.

Aquifers are classified based on their physical characteristics and the presence of confining layers:

  • Unconfined Aquifer: Also known as a water-table aquifer, its upper boundary is the water table, which is at atmospheric pressure. Water levels in wells tapping this aquifer coincide with the water table. It is directly recharged by infiltration from the surface.
  • Confined Aquifer: Also called an artesian aquifer, it is bounded above and below by impermeable or semi-permeable layers (aquicludes or aquitards). The water in this aquifer is under pressure greater than atmospheric pressure. When tapped by a well, the water level rises above the top of the aquifer to a level known as the piezometric surface.
  • Leaky (Semi-confined) Aquifer: This is an aquifer whose confining layer is not completely impermeable but allows for slow vertical leakage of water into or out of the aquifer from adjacent formations.
  • Perched Aquifer: A localized zone of saturation occurring above the main water table, created by an impermeable lens (such as clay) within a permeable formation. These are typically limited in extent and yield.

Key features distinguishing these aquifers include:

  • Storage Coefficient: In unconfined aquifers, this is equivalent to specific yield (drainage by gravity), whereas in confined aquifers, it is very small, representing the elasticity of the aquifer matrix and water compressibility.
  • Recharge Mechanism: Unconfined aquifers are sensitive to surface activities and rainfall, whereas confined aquifers are recharged at distant outcrop areas where the formation is exposed at the surface.
  • Pressure Conditions: Confined aquifers exhibit artesian conditions, while unconfined aquifers maintain a free water surface.
