JNTU B.Tech III SOIL MECHANICS Previous Question Paper (August/September - 2024 - R16)

B.Tech | III | III-II | R16 | August/September - 2024

Answer PaperPaper Code: 136DVMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What will be the void ratio of soil if porosity of the same is 40%?

2 marks

Answer

The void ratio (e) can be calculated from the porosity (n) using the relationship:

e = n / (1 - n)

Given the porosity n = 40% = 0.40, substituting the value into the formula:

e = 0.40 / (1 - 0.40) = 0.40 / 0.60 = 0.667

Therefore, the void ratio of the soil is 0.667.

1.b

Define Liquid limit of soil. Give its significance.

3 marks

Answer

The Liquid Limit (LL) is defined as the minimum water content at which a soil changes from a liquid state to a plastic state. In the laboratory, it is determined as the water content at which a standard groove cut in a soil pat closes over a distance of 12.7 mm after 25 blows in a Casagrande apparatus.

Its significance includes:

  • It is used to classify fine-grained soils and determine their engineering properties.
  • It helps in calculating the Plasticity Index, which indicates the range of water content over which the soil exhibits plastic behavior.
  • It provides an estimate of the compressibility and shear strength of the soil, where higher liquid limits generally indicate higher compressibility and lower permeability.
