JNTU B.Tech III SOIL MECHANICS Previous Question Paper (August/September - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What will be the void ratio of soil if porosity of the same is 40%?
Answer
The void ratio (e) can be calculated from the porosity (n) using the relationship:
Given the porosity n = 40% = 0.40, substituting the value into the formula:
Therefore, the void ratio of the soil is 0.667.
Define Liquid limit of soil. Give its significance.
Answer
The Liquid Limit (LL) is defined as the minimum water content at which a soil changes from a liquid state to a plastic state. In the laboratory, it is determined as the water content at which a standard groove cut in a soil pat closes over a distance of 12.7 mm after 25 blows in a Casagrande apparatus.
Its significance includes:
- It is used to classify fine-grained soils and determine their engineering properties.
- It helps in calculating the Plasticity Index, which indicates the range of water content over which the soil exhibits plastic behavior.
- It provides an estimate of the compressibility and shear strength of the soil, where higher liquid limits generally indicate higher compressibility and lower permeability.

A layer of soft clay is 6m thick and lies under a newly constructed building. The weight of sand overlying the clay layer produces a pressure of 2.6 kg/cm2 and the new construction increases the pressure by 1.0 kg/cm2. If the compression index is 0.5. Compute the settlement. Water content is 40% and specific gravity of grains is 2.65.
