JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV ESTIMATION, COSTING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT Previous Question Paper (February/March - 2022 - R18)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Prepare the approximate cost of building project (group Housing) with the following details:
a) No. of houses = 150
b) Plinth area of each dwelling = 600m2
c) Plinth area rate = Rs. 5,000/- per m2
d) Cost of water supply & sanitary arrangements @ 12½%
e) Electrification at 7½% of cost of building
f) Cost of roads & Lawns @ 5%
g) Cost of P.S. & contingencies @ 4%
Answer
To calculate the approximate cost of the group housing project, we first determine the total plinth area and the base building cost, followed by the addition of various percentage-based provisions.
- Total Plinth Area: 150 houses × 600 m2/house = 90,000 m2
- Base Building Cost: 90,000 m2 × Rs. 5,000/m2 = Rs. 45,00,00,000
- Additions:
- Water supply & sanitary (12.5%): 0.125 × 45,00,00,000 = Rs. 5,62,50,000
- Electrification (7.5%): 0.075 × 45,00,00,000 = Rs. 3,37,50,000
- Roads & Lawns (5%): 0.05 × 45,00,00,000 = Rs. 2,25,00,000
- Sub-total: 45,00,00,000 + 5,62,50,000 + 3,37,50,000 + 2,25,00,000 = Rs. 56,25,00,000
- Contingencies & P.S. (4% of sub-total): 0.04 × 56,25,00,000 = Rs. 2,25,00,000
- Total Estimated Cost: 56,25,00,000 + 2,25,00,000 = Rs. 58,50,00,000
The total approximate cost of the project is Rs. 58,50,00,000 (Fifty-eight crores and fifty lakhs only).
Prepare the detailed estimate for the following items of work for the building:
a) R.C.C. (1:1.5:3) in columns upto ground level only.
b) R.C.C. (1:2:4) in plinth beams.
Answer
To prepare a detailed estimate for R.C.C. works, we calculate the volume by multiplying the length, breadth, and height/depth of each structural member. The estimate is prepared in a standard measurement sheet format.
| Item No. | Description of Work | No. | Length (m) | Breadth (m) | Height/Depth (m) | Quantity (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | R.C.C. (1:1.5:3) in columns upto GL | n | L | B | H | n × L × B × H |
| 2 | R.C.C. (1:2:4) in plinth beams | n | L | B | H | n × L × B × H |
Steps for calculation:
- Identify the number of columns and their respective cross-sectional dimensions from the structural drawings.
- Measure the height of the columns from the top of the footing to the ground level (GL).
- For plinth beams, calculate the total center-to-center length of the beams and adjust for overlaps at junctions to avoid double counting.
- Multiply the number of units by the dimensions to obtain the total volume in cubic meters.
- Deduct the volume of steel reinforcement (usually 1% to 2% of total volume) if specified by the project requirements, though typically, standard estimates for R.C.C. include the volume of concrete required for the member size.
- Summarize the quantities in an abstract sheet, applying current schedule of rates (SSR) to arrive at the total cost.

An equipment that was purchased at a cost of Rs 20 lakhs, six years ago is considered for replacement. The existing equipment can be sold at a price of Rs. 5 lakhs and if kept for another six years will have salvage value of Rs. 1 lakh. The challenger has annual operating cost of Rs. 50,000/- and its salvage value is Rs. 5 lakhs at the end of 12 years. Rate of interest is 10%. Decide whether to continue services of existing equipment or replace it.
