A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment 60 kN-m and a torque of 25 kN-m. Design the shaft according to maximum shear stress theory and maximum distortion theory. Adopt the stress at elastic limit as 250 N/mm2, Poisson’s ratio is 0.3 and the factor of safety is 2.

Answer

Given: Bending moment M = 60 kNm = 60 × 106 Nmm, Torque T = 25 kNm = 25 × 106 Nmm, Yield stress σy = 250 N/mm2, Factor of safety FOS = 2, Poisson's ratio μ = 0.3. The allowable stress σallow = σy / FOS = 250 / 2 = 125 N/mm2. The bending stress σ = (32M) / (πd3) and shear stress τ = (16T) / (πd3).

1. Maximum Shear Stress Theory (Guest's Theory): The design equation is τmax = (1 / 2) * sqrt(σ2 + 4τ2) ≤ (σy / 2FOS). Substituting values: sqrt((32M/πd3)2 + 4(16T/πd3)2) = σy / FOS. This simplifies to (16 / πd3) * sqrt(M2 + T2) = σy / FOS. sqrt(602 + 252) = 65 kNm. Thus, (16 * 65 * 106) / (πd3) = 125. d3 = (16 * 65 * 106) / (π * 125) = 2648083. d = 138.3 mm.

2. Maximum Distortion Energy Theory (Von Mises Theory): The design equation is sqrt(σ2 + 3τ2) ≤ σy / FOS. Substituting stresses: (16 / πd3) * sqrt((2M)2 + 3T2) = σy / FOS. sqrt((2 * 60)2 + 3 * 252) = sqrt(14400 + 1875) = 127.57 kNm. Thus, (16 * 127.57 * 106) / (πd3) = 125 * 2. d3 = (16 * 127.57 * 106) / (π * 250) = 2599986. d = 137.5 mm.

The required shaft diameter is 138.3 mm based on the more conservative Maximum Shear Stress Theory.

A closed coil helical spring of round steel wire 10mm in diameter has a mean radius of 120 mm. The spring has 10 complete turns and is subjected to a axial load of 200 N. Determine: i) deflection of the spring ii) Maximum shear stress in the wire iii) stiffness of the spring. G = 80 kN/mm2.

10 marks

Answer

Given: Wire diameter (d) = 10 mm, Mean radius (R) = 120 mm, Number of turns (n) = 10, Axial load (W) = 200 N, Modulus of rigidity (G) = 80,000 N/mm2. Mean coil diameter (D) = 2R = 240 mm.

  1. Deflection (δ): The formula is δ = (64WR3n) / (Gd4). Substituting values: δ = (64 × 200 × 1203 × 10) / (80000 × 104) = 276.48 mm.
  2. Maximum shear stress (τ): The formula is τ = (16WR) / (πd3). Substituting values: τ = (16 × 200 × 120) / (π × 103) = 122.23 N/mm2.
  3. Stiffness (k): The formula is k = W / δ = 200 / 276.48 = 0.723 N/mm.
