Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

Define the terms: i) Torsion ii) Torsional rigidity iii) Polar M.I.

2 marks

Answer

i) Torsion is the state of a structural member subjected to twisting moments that tend to rotate it about its longitudinal axis. ii) Torsional rigidity is the product of the modulus of rigidity (G) and the polar moment of inertia (J), representing the resistance of a shaft to twisting per unit length. iii) Polar M.I. (J) is the second moment of area of a cross-section about the polar axis (the axis perpendicular to the plane of the cross-section passing through the centroid).

b

What do you mean by resilience of a spring?

3 marks

Answer

Resilience of a spring is the total strain energy stored in the spring when it is deformed by an external load up to the elastic limit. It represents the capacity of the spring to absorb energy without undergoing permanent deformation.

c
