Answer PaperPaper Code: 126WYMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks. Use of IS: 800-2007 code, steel table and extracts from code is permitted.

Part A

125 marks
a

List the types of structural steel.

2 marks

Answer

The common types of structural steel are mild steel, high-tensile steel, and stainless steel. In structural applications, structural carbon steel (like IS 2062) is the most frequently used grade.

b

Explain the types of Welded joints with neat sketch.

3 marks

Answer

Welded joints are primarily classified into two types: Fillet welds and Butt welds. A fillet weld is triangular in cross-section and joins two surfaces at right angles (lap joint or T-joint). A butt weld is used to join two plates placed in the same plane by filling the gap between them with weld metal. Sketches would show the triangular profile for fillet welds and the penetration profile for square, V, or U-groove butt welds.

c

Define Slenderness ratio.
