JNTU B.Tech III STEEL STRUCTURES DESIGN AND DRAWING Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks. Use of IS: 800-2007 code, steel table and extracts from code is permitted.
Part A
List the types of structural steel.
Answer
The common types of structural steel are mild steel, high-tensile steel, and stainless steel. In structural applications, structural carbon steel (like IS 2062) is the most frequently used grade.
Explain the types of Welded joints with neat sketch.
Answer
Welded joints are primarily classified into two types: Fillet welds and Butt welds. A fillet weld is triangular in cross-section and joins two surfaces at right angles (lap joint or T-joint). A butt weld is used to join two plates placed in the same plane by filling the gap between them with weld metal. Sketches would show the triangular profile for fillet welds and the penetration profile for square, V, or U-groove butt welds.

A 125 mm × 12 mm plate is to be welded to another plate 150 mm × 12 mm by the fillet welding on three sides. The size of the weld is 8 mm. Find out the necessary overlap of the plate for full strength of the joint. Take the permissible tensile stress in the plate as 150 N/mm2 and in the weld as 110 N/mm2.
