JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2018 - R13)

B.Tech | II Year | I Semester | R13 | April/May - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 113BRMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

State and explain Ohm's law.

2 marks

Answer

Ohm's law states that the current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage across its ends and inversely proportional to the resistance of the conductor, provided the temperature and other physical conditions remain unchanged.

Mathematically, it is expressed as:

V = I * R

Where:

V is the voltage across the conductor (in Volts)

I is the current flowing through the conductor (in Amperes)

R is the resistance of the conductor (in Ohms)

b

2 ohm, 4 ohm and 6 ohm resistors are connected in delta form, obtain its equivalent star connected network.

3 marks

Answer

For a delta (Δ) connected network with resistances R12, R23, and R31 between terminals 1-2, 2-3, and 3-1 respectively, the equivalent star (Y) connected network has resistances R1, R2, and R3 connected from a common neutral point to terminals 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The conversion formulas are:

R1 = (R12 * R31) / (R12 + R23 + R31)

R2 = (R12 * R23) / (R12 + R23 + R31)

R3 = (R23 * R31) / (R12 + R23 + R31)

Given:

R12 = 2 ohm

R23 = 4 ohm

R31 = 6 ohm

Sum of resistances = 2 + 4 + 6 = 12 ohm

Calculating the equivalent star resistances:

R1 = (2 * 6) / 12 = 12 / 12 = 1 ohm

R2 = (2 * 4) / 12 = 8 / 12 = 2/3 ohm

R3 = (4 * 6) / 12 = 24 / 12 = 2 ohm

Therefore, the equivalent star connected network has resistances of 1 ohm, 2/3 ohm, and 2 ohm connected from the neutral point to terminals 1, 2, and 3 respectively.
