a

Draw the block diagram of a digital computer and explain the purpose of each part.

6 marks

Answer

The block diagram of a digital computer consists of five primary functional units that work in coordination to process information:
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU): The brain of the computer, comprising the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) for performing calculations and logical operations, and the Control Unit (CU) which directs the flow of data and instructions.
  • Memory Unit: Stores data and instructions required for processing. It is divided into primary memory (RAM/ROM) for fast access and secondary storage for long-term retention.
  • Input Unit: Converts external data and commands into binary signals that the computer can process (e.g., keyboard, mouse).
  • Output Unit: Translates processed binary data back into human-readable formats (e.g., monitors, printers).
  • System Bus: The communication pathway consisting of the Data Bus, Address Bus, and Control Bus, which interconnects all components to facilitate data transfer.

Design a 4-bit combinational circuit decrementer using four full-adder circuits.

9 marks

Answer

To design a 4-bit decrementer, we represent the operation as A - 1, which is equivalent to A + (2's complement of 1). The 2's complement of 1 is 1111. Thus, subtracting 1 is equivalent to adding 1111 to the input bits (A3 A2 A1 A0).

Using four full adders (FA) connected in a ripple-carry configuration:
  1. The input bits A0, A1, A2, A3 are connected to the first input of each respective full adder.
  2. The second input of every full adder is tied to logic 1 (since 1111 is added).
  3. The Carry-In (Cin) of the first full adder (FA0) is set to 0.
  4. The Carry-Out (Cout) of each FA is connected to the Carry-In of the next FA.
  5. The outputs S0, S1, S2, S3 represent the decremented value.
Note: The final carry-out from the fourth FA is ignored in this specific decrement operation.
