JNTU B.Tech II FORMAL LANGUAGES AND AUTOMATA THEORY Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
Part A
Define DFA and NFA.
Answer
A Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA) is a 5-tuple (Q, Σ, δ, q0, F) where for every state and input symbol, there is exactly one transition to a next state. An Nondeterministic Finite Automaton (NFA) is a 5-tuple where the transition function δ maps to a power set of states, allowing zero, one, or multiple possible next states for a given input.
Design NFA to accept set of all strings over {0,1} does not contain 3 consecutive zeros.
Answer
To accept strings not containing '000', the NFA tracks the number of consecutive zeros seen. Let states be q0 (0 zeros), q1 (1 zero), q2 (2 zeros), and q3 (dead state for 3 zeros). Transitions: δ(q0, 1)=q0, δ(q0, 0)=q1, δ(q1, 1)=q0, δ(q1, 0)=q2, δ(q2, 1)=q0, δ(q2, 0)=q3. Final states are {q0, q1, q2}.
