Describe the various software myths.
Answer
Software myths are erroneous beliefs held by managers, customers, and practitioners that create false expectations and lead to poor decision-making in software development. They are categorized as follows:
- Management Myths: These include the belief that adding more programmers to a late project will make it faster (Brooks' Law), the assumption that standards and procedures are sufficient for quality, and the reliance on automated tools as a complete solution for development.
- Customer Myths: These involve the misconception that a general statement of objectives is enough to begin development, that software requirements are easily changed once development starts, and that the customer's role ends after the requirements are provided.
- Practitioner Myths: These include the belief that the job is finished once the code is written and running, that the only deliverable is the working program, and that software cannot be tested until it is fully completed.
Explain the overview of unified process model.
Answer
The Unified Process (UP) is an iterative, architecture-centric, and use-case-driven framework for software development. It organizes the project lifecycle into four distinct phases:
- Inception Phase: Focuses on defining the scope of the project, identifying key use cases, and establishing a business case. It determines the feasibility and economic viability of the project.
- Elaboration Phase: Aims to analyze the problem domain, establish a sound architectural foundation, and eliminate the highest-risk elements. The majority of use cases are detailed here.
- Construction Phase: Involves the implementation of the software through coding and testing. The architecture is populated with components, and the system is built to a state where it can be transitioned to the user.
- Transition Phase: Focuses on moving the software to the user community, including beta testing, user training, and final deployment.
The UP operates through iterations within these phases, where each iteration results in an executable release of the system, allowing for continuous risk management and refinement.
