Discuss the principles of Taylor’s Scientific Management and explain the limitations.
Answer
Frederick Winslow Taylor, known as the father of Scientific Management, proposed a systematic approach to improve industrial efficiency. His principles focus on replacing rule-of-thumb methods with scientific study of tasks.
Principles of Scientific Management:
- Science, not Rule of Thumb: Every task should be analyzed scientifically to determine the 'one best way' to perform it, rather than relying on the worker's intuition or past habits.
- Scientific Selection and Training: Workers should be selected based on their physical and mental capabilities for a specific job and then trained systematically to reach their maximum potential.
- Cooperation between Management and Workers: Management and labor should work in harmony, ensuring that the work is done in accordance with scientific principles.
- Equal Division of Responsibility: Management should take over all work for which they are better fitted than the workmen, specifically in planning and organizing, while workers focus on execution.
Limitations:
- Mechanical Approach: It treats workers as cogs in a machine, ignoring the psychological and social needs of employees.
- Over-Specialization: Extreme division of labor leads to monotony and boredom, which can reduce worker motivation and creativity.
- Conflict with Unions: Labor unions often opposed scientific management, fearing that it would lead to job losses and excessive pressure to meet high production quotas.
- Assumption of Rationality: It assumes that workers are motivated solely by financial incentives, ignoring other factors like job satisfaction and work environment.
Explain the functions of management and discuss the role of a manager.
Answer
Management is the process of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling resources to achieve organizational goals effectively and efficiently.
Functions of Management:
- Planning: Defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities. It is the primary function that sets the direction.
- Organizing: Determining what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made.
- Staffing: The process of recruiting, selecting, training, and developing employees to fill the roles within the organizational structure.
- Directing: Involves leading, motivating, and communicating with subordinates to ensure they perform their tasks effectively.
- Controlling: Monitoring performance, comparing it with goals, and taking corrective action if deviations occur.
Role of a Manager:
A manager acts as the bridge between the organization's objectives and the workforce. Their roles include:
- Interpersonal Roles: Acting as a figurehead, leader, and liaison to maintain internal and external relationships.
- Informational Roles: Serving as a monitor, disseminator, and spokesperson to ensure information flows correctly within and outside the team.
- Decisional Roles: Functioning as an entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, and negotiator to make critical business decisions.
