Answer PaperPaper Code: 136CXMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What multiplexing schemes are used in GSM and for what purpose?

2 marks

Answer

GSM utilizes a combination of Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). FDMA is used to divide the available bandwidth into distinct carrier frequencies, while TDMA further divides each carrier frequency into time slots, allowing multiple users to share the same frequency channel without interference.

1b

List the limitations of a GSM cell in terms of diameter and capacity (voice, data) for the traditional GSM and GPRS.

3 marks

Answer

The limitations of a GSM cell are defined by physical propagation constraints and spectral efficiency:

  • Cell Diameter: In traditional GSM, the maximum cell radius is limited to 35 km due to the timing advance mechanism. If a mobile station is further away, the round-trip delay exceeds the duration of one time slot, causing interference with adjacent slots.
  • Voice Capacity: GSM capacity is limited by the available frequency spectrum and the frequency reuse factor. A single carrier supports 8 time slots, and after accounting for signaling overhead, the number of simultaneous voice calls per cell is strictly constrained by the number of transceiver units (TRXs) deployed at the base station.
  • Data Capacity (GPRS): GPRS capacity is limited by the number of Packet Data Channels (PDCHs) that can be dynamically allocated from the available time slots. Throughput is restricted by the coding schemes (CS-1 to CS-4), with a maximum theoretical peak of 21.4 kbps per time slot, though real-world performance is significantly lower due to shared bandwidth and network congestion.
