Describe the architecture of Data Warehousing with suitable diagram and write its advantages and uses.

15 marks

Answer

A Data Warehouse (DW) architecture is a multi-tiered framework designed to support business intelligence by integrating data from disparate sources into a unified repository. It typically consists of three primary layers:

  1. Bottom Tier (Data Source Layer): Contains operational databases, ERP systems, CRM systems, and external data sources. Data is extracted from these systems using ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  2. Middle Tier (Warehouse Server): Consists of the OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) server that transforms data into a multidimensional view. It includes the data warehouse database, which stores integrated, subject-oriented, and time-variant data.
  3. Top Tier (Front-End Layer): The client layer where end-users interact with the data through reporting tools, query tools, data mining applications, and dashboards for decision-making.

Diagrammatic representation description: The architecture flows from left to right, starting with multiple operational source systems feeding into an ETL/Data Integration layer, which then populates the central Data Warehouse. The warehouse serves an OLAP server, which in turn provides data to end-user interfaces such as spreadsheets, reporting tools, and analytical dashboards.

Advantages:

  • Enhanced Decision Making: Provides a single version of the truth, allowing management to make data-driven decisions based on historical trends.
  • Improved Performance: Separates analytical processing from operational systems, preventing resource contention and ensuring faster query response times.
  • Data Quality and Consistency: Standardizes data formats and definitions across the organization during the transformation phase.
  • Historical Intelligence: Stores large volumes of historical data, enabling long-term trend analysis that operational databases cannot support.

Uses:

  • Reporting: Generating periodic business reports such as monthly sales or inventory summaries.
  • Data Mining: Discovering hidden patterns, correlations, and anomalies within large datasets.
  • Business Intelligence (BI): Supporting executive dashboards and performance scorecards.
  • Predictive Analytics: Using historical data to forecast future business outcomes and market shifts.

What do you understand by Business Process Reengineering (BPR)? Discuss the various phases of BPR.

15 marks

Answer

Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed. It focuses on processes rather than functions, aiming to eliminate non-value-added activities and leverage technology to optimize organizational workflows.

The implementation of BPR typically follows these phases:

  1. Preparation: Define the strategic goals, identify the processes to be reengineered, and establish a cross-functional team. This phase involves securing management commitment and setting clear performance targets.
  2. Process Identification: Map the existing 'as-is' processes to understand current workflows, identify bottlenecks, and determine which processes are critical to business success and customer satisfaction.
  3. Process Analysis and Visioning: Analyze the 'as-is' processes to uncover inefficiencies. Develop a 'to-be' vision that ignores current constraints and focuses on how the process could optimally function using modern technology and innovative practices.
  4. Process Design: Create the detailed design of the new processes. This involves defining new roles, responsibilities, information flows, and the integration of IT systems to support the redesigned workflows.
  5. Implementation and Transition: Execute the pilot or full-scale rollout of the new process. This includes training employees, updating organizational structures, and managing the cultural change required for the new way of working.
  6. Evaluation and Continuous Improvement: Monitor the performance of the redesigned process against the initial metrics. Use feedback loops to refine the process and ensure that the improvements are sustained over time.
