What do you understand by a System? Discuss the characteristics of a system.
Answer
A system is defined as a set of interrelated components or elements that work together in an organized manner to achieve a common objective. It functions as a whole by processing inputs to produce desired outputs through a transformation process.
The key characteristics of a system include:
- Organization: A system has a structure that defines the relationship between its components, ensuring they function in a coordinated way.
- Interaction: The components of a system are interdependent; the performance of one part affects the others.
- Interdependence: No part of a system can function in isolation; the system relies on the integration of all its subsystems.
- Integration: Systems are designed to unify various functions to achieve a specific goal, often greater than the sum of its parts (synergy).
- Central Objective: Every system is purposeful and exists to fulfill a specific mission or output requirement.
Explain why Feedback and Control are considered as the Key System Concepts?
Answer
Feedback and Control are essential because they enable a system to maintain stability and achieve its objectives in a dynamic environment.
Feedback is the process of monitoring the output of a system and returning a portion of that information back to the input stage. It serves as a diagnostic tool, allowing the system to determine if the actual output aligns with the planned goals. Without feedback, a system operates blindly and cannot adjust to errors or environmental changes.
Control is the mechanism that uses the information provided by feedback to regulate the system's processes. It involves comparing actual performance against established standards and implementing corrective actions to minimize deviations. Together, these concepts form a closed-loop system where:
- Feedback provides the necessary data on performance.
- Control acts upon that data to adjust inputs or processes.
- This cycle ensures the system remains goal-oriented, efficient, and resilient against internal or external disturbances.
