What is Information System strategic grid? Explain its quadrants and their contexts.
Answer
The Information System Strategic Grid, developed by F. Warren McFarlan and James L. McKenney, is a framework used to assess the strategic impact of information technology on a firm's current operations and its future competitive position. It maps the role of IT across two dimensions: the impact of existing systems on current operations and the impact of planned systems on future strategy.
The grid consists of four quadrants:
- Support: IT is essential for daily operations but not critical for future competitive advantage. The focus is on cost-efficiency and reliability.
- Factory: IT is critical for current operations but not for future strategy. System failure would be catastrophic, so high availability and operational stability are paramount.
- Turnaround: IT is not currently critical but is expected to be vital for future competitive advantage. The firm is investing heavily to transform its business model.
- Strategic: IT is critical for both current operations and future competitive success. These organizations are highly dependent on IT for innovation and market leadership.
Brief on types of information systems.
Answer
Information systems are categorized based on the organizational level they serve and the specific management functions they support:
- Transaction Processing Systems (TPS): Serve operational-level managers by recording and processing daily routine transactions (e.g., payroll, sales orders).
- Management Information Systems (MIS): Provide middle management with reports on current performance and historical data to monitor and control the business.
- Decision Support Systems (DSS): Assist middle and upper management in making non-routine decisions by providing analytical models and data analysis tools.
- Executive Support Systems (ESS): Designed for senior management to address strategic issues and long-term trends through high-level summaries and external data integration.
- Expert Systems/Knowledge Management Systems: Capture and distribute organizational knowledge or simulate human expertise to solve specific complex problems.
