Draw a parabola if the distance of the focus from the directrix is 60 mm.

10 marks

Answer

To construct a parabola with a focus-directrix distance (f) of 60 mm, follow these steps:

  1. Draw a vertical line as the directrix and a horizontal line perpendicular to it as the axis.
  2. Mark the focus F on the axis at a distance of 60 mm from the directrix.
  3. Locate the vertex V at the midpoint of the distance between the focus and the directrix (30 mm from each).
  4. Mark several points 1, 2, 3, etc., on the axis beyond the vertex.
  5. Draw vertical lines through these points perpendicular to the axis.
  6. With the focus F as the center and radius equal to the distance from the point (e.g., V1) to the directrix, draw arcs to intersect the vertical line passing through point 1. Repeat this for points 2, 3, etc.
  7. Join the vertex and the intersection points with a smooth curve to form the parabola.
b

A circle of diameter 40 mm rolls inside another circle of radius 60 mm. Draw the hypocycloid traced by a point on the rolling circle initially in contact with the directing circle for one revolution.

15 marks

Answer

For a hypocycloid where a rolling circle of diameter 40 mm (radius r = 20 mm) rolls inside a directing circle of radius R = 60 mm:

  1. Draw the directing circle with radius R = 60 mm and mark the center O.
  2. Draw the rolling circle inside, tangent to the directing circle at point P.
  3. Divide the rolling circle into 12 equal parts and label them 1, 2, ..., 12.
  4. Calculate the angle subtended by the rolling circle at the center O for one full revolution: θ = (r/R) * 360° = (20/60) * 360° = 120°.
  5. Divide the 120° sector of the directing circle into 12 equal parts.
  6. Draw arcs with center O and radii corresponding to the heights of points 1, 2, ..., 12 from the directing circle.
  7. With center O as the pivot, draw arcs through the division points of the 120° sector to intersect the previous arcs.
  8. Mark the intersection points and join them with a smooth curve to complete the hypocycloid.
