JNTU B.Tech I Year ENGINEERING PHYSICS - I Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Define temporal and spatial coherence.
Answer
Temporal coherence refers to the correlation of a wave's phase at a single point in space at different times, effectively defining the monochromaticity of the source. Spatial coherence refers to the correlation of phase between two different points in space at the same time, defining the degree of wavefront uniformity across the beam.
Explain the significance of beam splitter in Newton’s rings experiment.
Answer
In Newton's rings, the beam splitter is placed at an angle of 45 degrees to the incident light beam. Its primary significance is to reflect the light from the monochromatic source downward onto the air film formed between the lens and the glass plate. It also allows the reflected light from the film to pass through towards the microscope for observation, enabling the viewing of interference fringes under normal incidence.
