B.Tech | II | I | R18 | April/May - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 153ANMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

1.a

Given that (292)10 = (1204)b, determine the value of b.

2 marks

Answer

To find the base b, we express the decimal number 292 in terms of powers of b based on the given representation (1204)b:

1 × b3 + 2 × b2 + 0 × b1 + 4 × b0 = 292

Simplifying the equation:

b3 + 2b2 + 4 = 292
b3 + 2b2 - 288 = 0

Testing integer values for b, if b = 6: 216 + 2(36) = 216 + 72 = 288. Since 288 - 288 = 0, the base b is 6.

1.b

Write short notes on weighted binary codes.

3 marks

Answer

Weighted binary codes are a class of digital codes where each bit position is assigned a specific numerical weight. In these systems, the value of a decimal digit is calculated by summing the products of each bit's value (0 or 1) and its corresponding weight.

A general weighted code can be represented by the formula:

N = Σ (b_i × w_i)

where b_i represents the binary digit at position i and w_i represents the weight assigned to that position. The most common example is the standard 8421 BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) code, where the weights for the four bit positions are 8, 4, 2, and 1 respectively. Other examples include the 2421 code and the 5421 code. These codes are primarily used for decimal-to-binary conversion and arithmetic operations within digital systems.
