Answer PaperPaper Code: 114DTMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Convert (67A9)16 into decimal.

2 marks

Answer

To convert the hexadecimal number (67A9)16 to decimal, multiply each digit by 16 raised to the power of its position (starting from 0 on the right):

6 × 163 + 7 × 162 + 10 × 161 + 9 × 160

Calculating each term:

6 × 4096 + 7 × 256 + 10 × 16 + 9 × 1 = 24576 + 1792 + 160 + 9 = 26537

Thus, (67A9)16 = 2653710.

1b

Distinguish between weighted and non-weighted codes with example.

3 marks

Answer

Weighted codes are number systems where each digit position is assigned a specific weight, such that the value of the number is the sum of the products of each digit and its corresponding weight. In contrast, non-weighted codes do not assign a specific positional weight to each digit, meaning the value of the code cannot be determined by a simple summation of weighted positions.

Weighted Code Example: The Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) 8421 code. For instance, in the code 1001, the value is calculated as (1×8) + (0×4) + (0×2) + (1×1) = 9.

Non-Weighted Code Example: The Excess-3 code. This code is derived by adding 3 to the decimal digit before converting to binary; it does not follow a positional weight system, making it useful for arithmetic operations like subtraction using nines' complements.
