a

An antenna has a field pattern given by E(θ) = cos2θ for 0o ≤ θ ≤ 90o. Find the half power beam width.

2 marks

Answer

The half-power beam width (HPBW) occurs where the power is half the maximum, which corresponds to the field strength being 1/√2 of the maximum. Given E(θ) = cos2θ, we set cos2θ = 1/√2. Thus, cosθ = (1/√2)0.5 ≈ 0.8409. Solving for θ, we get θ ≈ 32.77o. Since the pattern is defined from 0o to 90o, the full beam width is 2 × 32.77o = 65.54o.

b

Define any three antenna parameters.

3 marks

Answer

1. Radiation Pattern: A graphical representation of the radiation properties of an antenna as a function of space coordinates. 2. Directivity: The ratio of the radiation intensity in a given direction to the average radiation intensity. 3. Gain: An antenna parameter which measures the degree of directivity of the antenna's radiation pattern, accounting for ohmic losses.
