a

Obtain an expression for maximum effective aperture for λ/2 Antenna.

7 marks

Answer

The effective aperture Ae of an antenna is related to its directivity D by the fundamental relation Ae = (λ2 / 4π) * D. For a half-wave dipole antenna, the maximum directivity D is approximately 1.64 (or 10/π). Substituting this value, the maximum effective aperture is:

Ae(max) = (λ2 / 4π) * 1.64 ≈ 0.13 λ2

This represents the area over which the antenna effectively captures power from an incident electromagnetic wave.

b

Show that the radiation resistance of λ/2 antenna is 73 ohm.

8 marks

Answer

The radiation resistance Rr is defined by the relation Prad = I02 * Rr / 2, where I0 is the peak current at the input terminals. For a half-wave dipole, the current distribution is sinusoidal: I(z) = I0 sin(k(l - |z|)). The radiated power is calculated by integrating the Poynting vector over a far-field sphere:

Prad = ∫ (E2 / 2η) dA

Substituting the far-field electric field expression E(θ) = (η I0 / 2πr) * [cos((π/2)cosθ) / sinθ], the integral becomes:

Prad = (η I02 / 4π) * ∫0π [cos2((π/2)cosθ) / sinθ] dθ

The integral evaluates to the cosine integral Ci(x), specifically 0.577 + ln(2π) - Ci(2π) ≈ 1.219. Thus, Prad = (η I02 / 4π) * 1.219. Given η ≈ 120π Ω, we find:

Rr = (2 * Prad) / I02 = (120π / 2π) * 1.219 ≈ 60 * 1.219 ≈ 73.14 Ω

Rounding to the standard value, the radiation resistance is 73 Ω.
