During the communication, how the various layers exchange information in OSI Model. Describe with the help of suitable diagram.
Answer
In the OSI Model, information exchange between layers occurs through two primary mechanisms: Peer-to-Peer communication and Interface communication. Each layer provides services to the layer above it and receives services from the layer below it.
The process of information flow is described as follows:
- Data Encapsulation (Sender Side): As data moves from the Application layer down to the Physical layer, each layer adds its own control information, known as a Header (and sometimes a Trailer), to the data unit received from the layer above. This process is called encapsulation. The data unit at each layer is referred to by specific names: Data (Application/Presentation/Session), Segment (Transport), Packet (Network), Frame (Data Link), and Bits (Physical).
- Peer-to-Peer Communication: Although data physically travels down the stack, logically, each layer at the sender communicates with its corresponding layer at the receiver. This is a virtual connection where the sender's layer N communicates with the receiver's layer N using the protocol defined for that layer.
- Data Decapsulation (Receiver Side): Upon reaching the destination, the process is reversed. The Physical layer receives the bits and passes them up. Each layer strips off its corresponding header, processes the control information, and passes the remaining data unit to the layer above until the original message reaches the Application layer.
The communication flow can be visualized as follows:
[Presentation Layer] <---> [Presentation Layer]
[Session Layer] <---> [Session Layer]
[Transport Layer] <---> [Transport Layer]
[Network Layer] <---> [Network Layer]
[Data Link Layer] <---> [Data Link Layer]
[Physical Layer] <---> [Physical Layer] (Physical Medium)
This layered architecture ensures modularity, where each layer is independent of the others, requiring only that it provides a defined interface to the adjacent layers. The Service Access Point (SAP) acts as the interface between layers, allowing the upper layer to request services from the lower layer.
Explain the TCP/IP architecture. Show the comparison with the OSI model with the help of schematic diagram.
Answer
The TCP/IP model is a practical, layered framework that serves as the foundation for the Internet. It is organized into four distinct layers, each handling specific communication tasks:
- Application Layer: Combines the functions of the OSI Application, Presentation, and Session layers. It provides protocols such as HTTP, FTP, and SMTP for user-level network services.
- Transport Layer: Responsible for end-to-end communication, error recovery, and flow control using protocols like TCP (connection-oriented) or UDP (connectionless).
- Internet Layer: Handles logical addressing and routing of packets across networks using the IP protocol. It determines the best path for data transmission.
- Network Access Layer: Combines the OSI Data Link and Physical layers. It defines how data is physically transmitted over the medium and handles hardware addressing (MAC addresses).
The comparison between the TCP/IP model and the 7-layer OSI model is summarized below:
| OSI Model Layers | TCP/IP Model Layers |
|---|---|
| Application | Application Layer |
| Presentation | |
| Session | |
| Transport | Transport Layer |
| Network | Internet Layer |
| Data Link | Network Access Layer |
| Physical |
Key differences include the OSI model's strict separation of layers versus the TCP/IP model's more flexible, protocol-driven approach. While the OSI model is primarily a theoretical reference for understanding network communication, the TCP/IP model is the actual implementation standard used in modern networking.
