Derive the equation for gm, which gives relation between gm, IC and temperature?
Answer
The transconductance gm is defined as the change in collector current IC with respect to the change in base-emitter voltage VBE, keeping collector-emitter voltage VCE constant. For a BJT operating in the active region, the collector current is given by the equation:
where IS is the reverse saturation current and VT is the thermal voltage. Differentiating IC with respect to VBE:
Substituting the expression for IC back into the equation, we get:
The thermal voltage VT is temperature-dependent and is defined as VT = kT / q, where k is the Boltzmann constant, T is the absolute temperature in Kelvin, and q is the electron charge. Thus, the final relation is:
Draw the CE amplifier with unbypassed emitter resistance and derive expression for Ri and Av.
Answer
In a common emitter (CE) amplifier with an unbypassed emitter resistance RE, the emitter resistor introduces negative current series feedback. Using the small-signal hybrid-π model, the input signal is applied to the base, and the output is taken at the collector.
Input Resistance (Ri): Looking into the base, the resistance is the sum of the base resistance and the reflected emitter resistance. Since the emitter current ie is approximately (β+1)ib, the resistance seen at the base is rπ + (β+1)RE. Thus:
Voltage Gain (Av): The voltage gain is the ratio of output voltage Vo to input voltage Vi. The output voltage is Vo = -gm * vbe * RC. The input voltage is Vi = ib * rπ + ie * RE. Since ie = (β+1)ib and vbe = ib * rπ, we have:
Using the relation gm * rπ = β, the expression simplifies to:
