Answer PaperPaper Code: 135AYMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

1a

Define the Op-Amp parameters: (i) Input offset voltage (Vio) and (ii) Input bias current, Iio.

2 marks

Answer

(i) Input offset voltage (Vio) is the differential DC voltage required between the two input terminals of an operational amplifier to force the output voltage to zero when the inputs are grounded.

(ii) Input bias current (Ib) is the average of the two currents flowing into the inverting and non-inverting input terminals of the op-amp, defined as Ib = (Ib1 + Ib2) / 2. It represents the DC current required to bias the internal transistors of the input stage.

1b

Discuss the features of voltage regulator.

3 marks

Answer

A voltage regulator is a circuit designed to maintain a constant output voltage regardless of changes in input voltage or load conditions. Its key features include:

  • Line Regulation: The ability of the regulator to maintain a constant output voltage despite variations in the input supply voltage.
  • Load Regulation: The ability to maintain a constant output voltage even when the load current changes, ensuring stability under varying demand.
  • Protection Features: Modern regulators often include internal circuitry for thermal shutdown, current limiting, and short-circuit protection to prevent damage to the device or the load.
  • Low Output Impedance: Regulators exhibit very low output impedance, which allows them to act as ideal voltage sources that do not drop voltage significantly when current is drawn.
