Explain the model for internetwork security.
Answer
The model for internetwork security provides a framework for protecting information as it is transmitted across a network. It consists of four fundamental components:
- Information Channel: The path through which data is transmitted, which is inherently insecure and subject to interception or modification.
- Security Transformation: The mechanism (such as encryption) applied to the message to ensure confidentiality and integrity before it enters the insecure channel.
- Trusted Third Party: An entity, such as a Certificate Authority or Key Distribution Center, that facilitates the exchange of security parameters like secret keys or digital certificates between communicating parties.
- Security Policy: The set of rules and protocols defined by the organization to govern how security services are implemented, managed, and enforced across the network.
This model ensures that even if an attacker gains access to the communication channel, they cannot read the message content (confidentiality), alter the data without detection (integrity), or impersonate the sender (authentication).
What is steganography?
Answer
Steganography is the art and science of hiding the very existence of a communication by embedding secret data within an innocuous cover medium. Unlike cryptography, which renders a message unreadable to unauthorized parties, steganography aims to prevent the observer from suspecting that a hidden message exists at all.
Common techniques include:
- Least Significant Bit (LSB) Insertion: Replacing the least significant bits of pixels in an image or audio samples with the bits of the secret message, causing minimal perceptible change to the cover file.
- Transform Domain Techniques: Embedding data in the frequency domain of an image (e.g., using Discrete Cosine Transform) to make the hidden information more robust against compression or filtering.
- Spread Spectrum: Spreading the secret message across the entire frequency spectrum of the cover signal, making it difficult to detect or remove without the correct key.
The security of steganography relies on the secrecy of the embedding algorithm and the difficulty of detecting statistical anomalies in the cover medium.
